How Does Dial to Stop Drug Dealing Work?

People living in communities affected by drug dealing are often unable or unwilling to call the Gardaí to report drug dealing activity in their area. Intimidation is a huge problem in these areas and there are legitimate concerns regarding the possibility of being exposed in the community as an informant. The Dial to Stop Drug Dealing phoneline offers a completely safe, confidential and anonymous way for people to give information on drug dealing activity in their area.

The idea is simple: ‘You Dial, We Act.’ A person with information on drug dealing activity in their community can pick up the phone and dial our freephone number 1800 220 220. They will get through to a trained operator who will ask them for their information and nothing more.

Calls are handled by a professional centre by individuals who have been trained to deal with the sensitivities around the issue. The caller will not be asked for their name, their number will not be traced. No one will know that they have called the line.

The information gathered is passed on directly to the Garda National Drugs Unit (GNDU) where it’s authenticity and usefulness are assessed. The GNDU will pass relevant information on to the Gardaí in the specified area for investigation. The Gardaí can use the information to build a case against a known drug dealer, to investigate new allegations of drug dealing activity in a community or to make an arrest.
